Teaching

As a lecturer in the philosophy department at Columbia University, Larry teaches three courses in Columbia’s Core Curriculum: Literature Humanities, Contemporary Civilization, and Music Humanities.

Larry also teaches Justice Now in Columbia's Institute for Comparative Literature and Society in partnership with the Eric H. Holder Initiative for Civil and Political Rights, which explores the debate between liberals, communitarians, and critical theorists over the last 50 years about justice and identity, with a focus on three areas: economic, racial, and environmental justice.

Larry co-teaches Practices in Community Building, a one-credit course for a fellowship cohort of 25 undergraduate students at Columbia.

Larry's long-running introductory philosophy course, “Things Fall Apart: Philosophy in a Time of Crisis,” offered at CUNY and NYU, combined a study of the history of philosophical problems, concepts, and schools of thought with discussion of pressing contemporary political, social, and economic issues.

Larry’s interdisciplinary course “The Idea of America,” offered at The New School in New York City, attempted to understand current political debates and the crisis of democracy in the United States through a study of philosophical and literary works that help us understand the deep history of current political issues.

Another course offered at The New School, “Bad Students,” examined the philosophical foundations of political movements in the United States, with an emphasis on the role of young people and their critiques of pedagogy and educational institutions.

a philosopher by training, larry has taught courses on philosophy, the history of ideas, literature, music, and politics.
